postroll #0, march 2025

post last modified 2 months ago

so, I've decided to begin making postrolls! ...sort of!

I posted about signing up for the entire bearblog feed (more-or-less) back in march, and I've been intermittently keeping up with reading it throughout april. (...may has been worse). and I've been favoriting a lot of posts I find interesting - the number is currently sitting at 243, whoops - so I thought I'd share them.

but the reason I decided to do this turned out to be so complicated to articulate that it became (appropriately for my handle) a post-tumor. it needed to be shorn off and turned into its own post. or, well, I say "needed" - I wanted to keep it cooking in the oven for a bit longer, which is sort of what this deleted essay was about... I make no promises about it ever materializing, but since it's actually written out (mostly), it's got a better outlook than other ideas I've floated

I originally planned to make this postroll a monthly series, but then I wrote almost nothing during april (because uni) and barely touched bearblog during may (because uni again). ...and then while writing the aforementioned excised introduction, I realized I was taking a stance with it that a monthly postroll would contradict, so I'm pumping the brakes on the schedule until I figure that out

I'm keeping the description of the original plans, though, because it's really just the schedule thing I have issues with. everything else is still in present tense, for now, so that's what I'll use

my casus belli (so to speak) is simple: I want older posts to get a second shot at attention. I go over this at length in the excised essay, but bearblog's chronological discovery feed is very busy. there's a reason it felt a little ridiculous to me to follow it, and why it feels less like following and more like fishing, or occasionally wading out onto a stream

but I think it sucks that the only way to find new things without them being popular first is to wade out somewhere that's incredibly overwhelming and unfriendly. which, yeah, I would describe "the rss feed of an entire blogging service" as such a thing regardless of how friendly its individual users are (which is very! the vast majority of people here are super nice, or at least, patient with strangers)

so, I wanted to highlight the things I found, that I thought were cool and worth sharing, and maybe other people can peruse. and obviously a lot of people do postrolls for this very reason, and normally I wouldn't bother making things that felt too tautological... but I had ideas for a postroll I would like to read. so I'm experimenting a bit!

the first idea: to make this 'roll only concern itself with bearblog posts. (...mostly). this is minor, and I'm sure other people do the same with their postrolls - though I've never actually checked

second of all, I'm gonna be discussing these posts as I link them. and not just discussing, but trying to add something worthwhile. to explain why I liked them, even if it's just "I think this poem is pretty". other people do this as well, so this is not the original part either

third place: I would be posting these with considerable delay. again, I was originally planning on doing this monthly; if I do, then I'm gonna be sharing what I saw two months ago. multiple reasons why, and why specifically two months, but mostly? I am very busy with uni and real-life, and whenever I feel like I owe the internet my time it works out very poorly. two months is the shortest time-frame during which I can set aside a couple afternoons to work through links and say thoughtful things. nothing worth apologizing for, according to conventional wisdom at least (though I feel a shapeless guilt about it...)

and the fourth and I think most important thing is that there is no selection criteria. none of these posts actually have to be anything, not even good. I just like all of them, I think they're cool and interesting, even if they're only a sentence - and that's part of the total lack of criteria: they can literally just be one sentence. I am only bringing things to you that I like. and that's it. what they are doesn't matter

like, I will make an effort to talk about why I like them, and so criteria might emerge from that, but it'll be fluid because this is mostly a vibes thing. my hope is that my picks will be eclectic enough to justify this postroll's existence to other people. and maybe this will happen, and maybe it won't! who's to say, not me...

also, an important notice: because a lot of people don't have contact methods set up in their blogs (which is fine), I've decided I'll be posting anything I see that I want to share. anything made public is fair game. that said, if anybody wants their post taken off this list, no worries - send me a email and I'll get on it, no questions asked

and uh, I also don't super-thoroughly check the blogs these posts originate from. I might even share posts I disagree with, if I think they're worth sharing. so, please don't assume I agree with people just because I share one of their posts and think it's a nice poem, or it words an argument in a good way, or whatnot. y'know, please no harassment? I'm asking for some preemptive grace/mercy here lol

(also, I speak spanish, so some of these will be in spanish. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

and that's about it! I hope you enjoy this postroll. see you on the flipside

Postroll: March 2025

Pi Day 2025

to be honest, I barely know anything about math, and memory-wise I've got a brain like a colander1, so pi digit memorization competitions are to me what driving I assume is like to people with red-green color blindness. that said, I still find a lot of beauty and joy in ridiculous math exercises done for fun, like this one! it really is a funny post, in my opinion

ESPAÑOL: me vuelvo suelo & mi corazón en una caja

dos poemas de amor que vi que me resultaron muy lindos!

Hair Ghost

a small anecdote about doing things for the art - in this case, growing long hair out! as someone who likes writing, I loooove it when people do new things because they wanna write new stuff.

The First Poem

a poem wondering what may have been the subject of the very first poem! me, I think love isn't a bad guess, I might personally guess fiction though... it depends maybe on your definition of poetry, but the oldest recorded poems we have, separate from songs, seem to be stories. though, it could also be a love story!

well, I didn't read it as serious speculation lol, just a poem! and a lovely one too. I can relate to wondering "who was the first one to ever do this thing that calls out to me?", and "would they have done it for the same reasons as I?"

Sharing What Moves Me

a post talking about the joy of writing reviews for things that have emotionally affected you. I can relate a whole lot - and I agree that the reviews I have the most fun reading are those where the reviewer clearly felt something about the subject, and was moved to review it through the need to express it

I also, I know I said I don't usually eyeball the rest of the blog too much, but on this blog's homepage there's a page linked that explains the reasoning behind the account's url/title and I found it delightful. it's not like, life-alteringly profound, I just liked it - the ballroom & dolly parton references made me happy :3 plus I think it's fun to hear why people name themselves the way they do online!

3/18/2025

a daily blog! this post talks about Jane Austen and being a literature major. it's neat because I'm also studying literature, though I haven't gotten so far as to have to start reading e.g. Austen (well, I'll likely be reading different things...). but I'm also someone who actually really likes reading fiction for class! I've been lucky, admittedly, that a lot of things I've read for class have just been good, but I've also been made to read things like Catcher in the Rye, which has a really mixed reception (from usamericans at least), & yet I really enjoyed it. hearing from people living my future life is interesting, as is hearing from people who will likely experience said future life differently from me! it's fun, I enjoyed it~

Hack the Nemesis System into your RPG

some considerations and ideas regarding the insights the Shadow of Mordor Nemesis system can bring to a TTRPG table. one of the funnest bits of TTRPGs is when NPCs inevitably gain so much greater a life of their own than the GM could've ever imagined, just because the players fixated on that NPC. the stories I could tell ya! and it comes with practical and immediate rule suggestions - genuinely heroic stuff, I think, because sandboxing it is really taxing on me as a GM, and I doubt I'm alone on that one, so having structure to fall back on is grand. bless

Game Reviews/Lock and Key

a page dedicated to a series of live game reviews! (as far as I can tell). that is, the author publishes an unfinished version of the review, and updates it regularly as more is written. I think this is really fun and interesting as a concept... I like the idea of refreshing a page every so often to check if there's more, having to manually check in with the growth of a project like that

and also, I really liked the thoughts on Death Stranding shared at the time of writing this! (late in may, ayayay). I've never played Death Stranding, but I think it's a really lovely work of art to exist even if I haven't felt it myself yet (a thing I think about a lot of things, but it's true for all of them). plus, I'd never heard about the Icelandic inspiration nor about DS's soundtrack, so both angles are really interesting things to discover and for someone to analyze!

Feel like shit, just want cozy windows 11 iot ltsc :(

some cursed-ass jpegs. classic stuff. need I say more

The activation energy threshold of activities

a very efficient and proactive take on the age-old problem of, "there's something I want to do, but it's so much effort". maybe I should do some threshold-lowering of my own, but when you have my type of adhd, maintaining those threshold-lowerings often becomes a black vortex side-hobby on top of the regular task... well, so it goes

british hiking, there is nothing old in this country, a forever

a series of poems by Angles Morts that I liked! they're very abstract, which I enjoy. I really like the lines about the pheasant avoiding its death in british hiking. the poem there is nothing old in this country includes an addition (extension?) talking about pasta hehe

Mystery Mini Reviews

a review of two game demos: neon-dystopic debate-like Of the Devil and b&w nun-centric mystery visual novel Misericorde. I like reading reviews that give impressions and opinions on the work being reviewed, so this was really nice to see~

The Price of Eggs, the Value of Taste

a three-in-one post, all themed around the idea of likes/dislikes, and all really insightful and interesting, in my opinion! subjects range from living the USA's Egg Crisis as someone who doesn't care much about eggs; to an analysis of why, materially, the author aesthetically disagrees with "AI"-generated art (real and relatable); to a simple question about cat food!

more people should bundle their posts, tbh. I think it's fun to open a link and boom, surprise extra post! they're like triplets, or like getting an extra nugget with your fast food order lol

✷ perennial

a tremendously sweet & lovely post!!! I cried a little reading it. it features a beautiful collage for a friend, in all sorts of lovely salmon-reds and pinks, made as a gift for a friend with so much love I could feel it through the screen <3

the collage features Princess Ozma, and the post dedicates its time to explain her history as a character who is a transgender girl, albeit through fantastical circumstances. it is an incredibly cute scene, I agree! and I'm really, just, as a trans person, I'm very very moved by the amount of thought put into her presence in the collage.

including additional illustrations of Ozma adds a lot to the post, I think - I'm real enamoured specifically with the one at the bottom of the post, the one that says "the end" in pretty cursive letters. I love how these old-timey fairytale illustrators rendered children (and often adults, too!) with these so very soft faces, and the lines imply tulle and glitter in such nice ways. it always reminds me of the artstyle of a family member I love very dearly haha

just a really sweet thing to see... I wish I got collages when I came out, I only got (lovingly!) teased for going from gay to straight lol2

also from the same blog: if you're going to a protest, leave your phone at home. good advice! I didn't know about this, actually (specifically, I didn't know even dumbphones could register your location) and if true (I haven't, uh, super verified this, actually, but it sounds reasonable) then it's a very valuable tip. remember to stay safe while protesting because the state sure fucking will not keep you safe!! (link to spanish CNN website, had a couple big-ass popups when I read it, sorry) (and YES!!! PENSIONERS!!! RETIREES!!! and a JOURNALIST too, if you hate javier milei you don't hate him enough!!!)

A typology of internet account deletion

exactly what it says on the tin: an anecdotal taxonomy of various websites' ways to delete your account. somebody should do a big study about this, tbh. also, the idea of a forum so ancient it doesn't even have a delete button is really funny. (and... kind of scary that you can't delete your steam account... but I guess I get it? considering the sorts of business steam runs...)

3 - On the Eve of a Blizzard

this may seem like contextless original fiction, but it is in fact a translation from japanese of a short story set in the world of square enix's game Octopath Traveler! I'm... very intrigued by H'aanit's accent lol. I haven't played Octopath Traveler, but this was still a really fun read!

tiny little pixelated bunny game

an anecdote about a dream! and some plans to bring it to fruition. I'm always a fan of turning your creative dreams into real stuff

my soul needs music

maybe not with music, but I can really relate to the thought of requiring the presence of art in my life (where would I be if I couldn't read and write fiction??). I hope OP can find a chorus to join!!

nowhere to journey but west

a travel blog post! off to British Columbia in Canada. I really liked the photographs! it looks like a very beautiful area. I can definitely relate to a greater familiarity with the Atlantic ocean though - actually, have I ever been to the Pacific...? I don't think so, that's wild

The Propagation of the People

in-universe writings from a fictional world! this one is a really neat poem. I enjoyed it!

3

a nice sentence. I really like "dlog" as a contraction of "daily log". dlog. say that out loud with your tongue, it's fun

Insulation

I also think modern amenities deserve free-verse poetry written about them. maybe I will make one of my own as well? feeling inspired!

Procrastination and Clarity

a post about how procrastination is more easily beat when you have clarity of objective. I think it's useful advice, personally - breaking things down into smaller steps is always a good idea when faced with a big task

I Hate Buying Second Hand Items That Smell of Cigarette Smoke

an anecdote about an unfortunate purchase!

toy canon #4: it's a great time to be a barbie

a personal history of 90s barbies! I really like specific hobby history, and this was written from a really fun anecdotal point of view. swell stuff! a longer, but light and pleasant read

WEG Star Wars Style Guide 1994 and Multi-Author Franchises

a look into an instructions manual for 90s star wars expanded universe writers!! I'm always super fascinated by the construction of franchises, so this was a really interesting read! I have no personal history with star wars, but I'm way too intimately familiar with the perils of superhero comic-book canon (as well as a couple other franchises who shalt go unnamed) to not have a horse in the "EU editorial guidelines" race. generally I'm super fascinated by expanded universes, maybe I'll write about this too...

[art, art meta] bloodborne and coping with pain

a beautiful, beautiful illustration, paired with an incredibly insightful, personal short essay about patience during moments of agony, as well as just a pinch of the tetris effect. I think it's immensely human to be in a situation of suffering and deal with it by fixating on escaping it: imagining something distant running, considering how to finally beat the difficult boss, counting down the minutes until something ends. I also appreciate the reflection on controlled suffering I see in this post - how Bloodborne becomes an escape mechanism because while, yes, it is tremendously difficult, it also ultimately wants you to succeed and therefore stop suffering; guides you to success in understated ways. this sort of thing helps a lot, I think, when you're dealing with something else that hurts, and that doesn't care, or can't care, if the suffering will end or not

I also, uh, I think this blog is friggin beautiful to look at. the color palette, the pokemon mystery dungeon (I think) header?? the art???? amazing showstopping beautiful talented incredible4. bless bless bless

ESPAÑOL: Mika and The Witch's Mountain

Winter Cafe

ah, it's nearly winter by the time I'm writing this (late may, ayayay) and I want to go to a café with friends... sounds so lovely. a little bit of original writing! can't tell to what degree it's fictional, but I don't think that matters. I simply liked it

poem page

a page organizing the poems this blog has shared! I mentioned how people often let pages be discoverable in my previous discovery feed post, this is a nice find that comes from that. I haven't read all of these poems, but I did really like the dichotomy in "the club and the kitchen". really beautiful! I particularly enjoyed how it wasn't cleanly resolved - both truths standing next to each other, unable to look at each other in the eye and click together, no matter how much they reference the other. big fan of this

the very best, pt. ix

have I ever played a pokemon game? no5. do I love genuinely ridiculous efforts from the pokemon fandom to engage with their object of adoration like this one? absolutely. I love it when people rewrite gym leader teams, I'll happily be lulled to sleep by competitive pokemon metagame analysis, and I eat up commentated nuzlocke videos for breakfast (shoutout to FlygonHG (youtube link), who has the most fun ones ones).

so this series of posts, which is a ranking of every single Pokemon X and Y trainer encounter based off coolness and skill at actual battling and training, is riiiight up my alley. it's really funny! and fun! I enjoyed this post a lot.

I have to say though, I disagree on the point that it's not crazy that bodies of water are navigable. that is incredible and Swimmer Kieran is right. like, damn, we can just go places? on boat? the world is so full of beauty and wonder.

padam padam

BOTANY! DRAG! PLAYGROUNDS! a little accounting of someone's day, and it sounds incredibly delightful. I watched the lipsynch video with an ambient track in the background, which lent it an ambiance. I recommend. I don't watch rupaul's drag race, but I'm incredibly charmed by the little fangs that the queen in the blue costume is wearing, even though objectively the boba costume is way more impressive. also, kylie minogue mentioned~

(...maaaaan, rupaul really does always look like a cardboard cutout, though...)

xyl

an obituary. what an absolute darling of a pet, and what a sweet story for an username/callsign. I've also got an elderly pet, and they're really something special... old, fuzzy babies the lot of them. really heart-tugging short post

Radio Stations

a story about radios in the 90s! I'm, uh, way younger than this person, but I can definitely relate to feeling overwhelmed all the time as a kid... I think life is just overwhelming when you're young because you're doing all of these things for the first time. right? and I do think it's a really neat memory to have! I've got a lot of treasured childhood memories regarding old stuff the adults around me owned as well lol. keeping stuff, it's worth it (so your kids can find it with no context and make entirely wrong assumptions)

...also, this person's website is super pretty, what the hell? and I am also, a little bit, obsessed with that cat. what a baby, eyes like limpid tears6 and not a thought behind 'em

Sapphire Alchemy

a small free-verse poem about gem-like things!

Learning Turkish is fun

language learning, so fun!! (even though I'm a total casual). I really like the idea of learning a "wildcard language". I have some languages I'd like to learn in the future (when I have the time/inclination to delve fully into language learning anyway lol) that I would say are unlikely for someone like me & living where I do, like japanese, arabic, or romanian (in rough order of "how likely is it that I'll actually get around to learning them"), and it's a fun thing to think about - what languages do I want to learn for no real reason, just for funzies?

also, as a bilingual person, it's always so fun when someone speaks your language. even if it's really likely and you already know they can speak it, it's still fun! like, I have friends from the southwestern USA who I've been cheering on to keep learning spanish for a good long while, and I have a lot of fun with that, despite spanish being a really common language and particularly for people from that area lol

I realize a lot of my conclusions throughout this postroll have been "X is fun". unfortunately, I am full of zest for life and so it's all true. things will continue to be fun until morale improves. and languages are fun! I like them.

We are all Walter White

an interesting examination of Walter White as a character, and the impact his actions left on Breaking Bad's audience. I don't know if I personally agree with the conclusion, but I do find it sound for the author, and above all, fun to read haha. though I also don't really have a horse in this race, seeing as I haven't seen Breaking Bad, have been somewhat spoiled as to how evil WW becomes, and honestly would've been part of that audience segment mentioned that's against what he's doing from day 0 (or, I would be at the moment, maybe not if I'd watched it live, at the age I was when it aired lol)

I do think it's interesting, though, to explore why someone would root for a complete shithead who does evil things. I like enough bad guys and bad-guy-heavy fiction for this discussion to apply to me - e.g. why root for one main character in a Vampire: the Masquerade game over another, if they're all just the woooooorst? this post delves into some reasons why. it's fun!

also from the same blog: Writing for Humans, a metablog with a pleasant jpeg of a bear :3

kvicky kvickly

a written image that I liked.

the joy of good food

food is the best thing ever. lately I've hungry way more often, after two long decades of being a picky and persnickety eater, and I find myself gravitating a lot to discussions of food, too. I keep watching, like, youtube cooking videos. it's crazy. anyway, I liked this post's analysis of indian food and how to best make it! I'm not very familiar with indian cuisine but this post makes me want to seek out a restaurant in my area and try some paneer - I've never had any and I'm intrigued by strange cheeses (so long as there's no blue stuff on them)

pups and hugs

three short written images about dogs!

Nematode Sticker

a post (and a poem, according to its tags) about sticker decision paralysis. real! whenever my stickers are too fancy for my journal, I feel so clueless as to where to put 'em...

I don't get why everyone has ditched Firefox

me neither!! seriously, ditching it for a fork is one thing, but ditching it for brave??? Chromium??? that's the main appeal of firefox to me, it's not running on chromium!! sometimes you just see a post on the internet and gesture, like, RIGHT?? THE EMPEROR IS SO TOTALLY NAKED!! WHAT ARE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT!! this was one of such cases lol.

Equipment Packages

another tabletop rpg post! I've lately been making a whole lot of player characters in more modern dungeon-type games (for fun, mostly, not for myself to play) and, yeah, having the option to just write "the usual basic stuff, please" in the equipment sheet is really nice lol.

Yes, Shrimp Matter

is it cheating to add a reblog of a non-bear post? who cares. shrimp heaven now. this is a post linking to a substack article about shrimp! you must certainly love shrimp enough to bear with it. (+ the substack article is really interesting!! I love you, shrimp...)

Evening bike ride 📸

some beautiful photographs of the sky!

CRAZY HAppENINGS!!!!!! TOMODACHI 3?!??!?!?

a long post talking (very casually) about the author's personal history with the Tomodachi videogame franchise!! and YES ISN'T IT CRAZY THAT THIS IS HAPPENING?? ack, I think weird and silly videogames are really cool and fun. also, I have a sense of solidarity with tomodachi life fans because I'm a huge miitopia guy (despite never having played it - I don't own any 3DS or Switch consoles - but I devour other people's playthroughs of the game(s) and they're very near and dear to my heart). one hundred thousand years of nintendo miis

Iced matcha too watered down?

it's always useful to note that ice cubes don't have to be made of water. not enough people try weird ice cubes out! (I tried doing 'em with my favourite drink, off-brand sprite, but it didn't really take because of the gas; so it goes)

also, it's a whole blog dedicated to matcha! I don't drink matcha (well, I've never tried, but I doubt I'd like it) but I think it's really delightful that this exists. (and also, I think that heart-shaped ice cube tray is really cute...)

TUNNELS & TROLLS - LET SLEEPING GODS LIE - I

the first part of a tabletop rpg adventure log! always a fan. some really neat bits in this one - I liked that the teleportation made the players hungry lol. (and the final line is a classic player move)

My Cactus Died

a short anecdote about a loss. I really resonate - I'm considering pre-writing an obituary for my uni backpack, which is falling apart at the seams. there's a difference in how living a polyester(?) backpack is vs. a cactus, of course, but neither do much more than sit there; and yet the loss of either still hurts!

(also, a minor note on how youtube does things, which is always useful for youtube-users!)

Guide to the Starter One-Shot

a TTRPG post giving general-purpose GMing tips! I really like the way the idea of a starter one-shot is presented in it. I find a starter one-shot is usually the default way to start a game, in the circles I play in, and we're less familiar with how to start a campaign without utilizing it, so it's interesting to hear from the other side!

The Three S's of wargames that are relevant to TTRPGs

a post about wargames and tabletop rpg design! I'm kind of a pantser with everything, including the little tabletop-rp-barely-g's I write to entertain my friends, so I like finding interesting new angles from which to approach rpg creation because it's like... dancing to different musical genres. (something like that. not really. but it's late so that's what I'm saying). I think this approach in particular will help me refine a more game-y one I've been rewriting a bunch of times; in general, a reminder to think about about win conditions is always super useful lol

Book Club Log #3

"I'm a draw-at-home secret anime fan who also hates anime, don't know what the term is for that" honestly, anime fan suffices lol

a post about... being social! because it's good for you! through gritted teeth. I can relate, unfortunately... I wish I could materially help in some way to be more confident speaking to people, but as someone who's also working on being more sociable, it really, disgustingly, evilly, villainously, is a question of practice. that social butterfly person sounds fun, though - right up my alley as well, I loooove yapping about stuff I haven't read/watched/etc yet (lol)

I think my mother tongue is beautiful, but I can’t ignore its ugly history

musings on the history of the english language. I'm an ESL person, but my first language is spanish, which is a lot of the same, so this post is really interesting for me... I think it's good for people to reflect on how commonplace english is as a lingua franca, but I would say this post catastrophizes about it a little. like, the atrocities are real (as is the cultural imperialism, which the americans will never live down while I'm still on this earth), but while you can definitely live your life only speaking english, you can also live your life only speaking any number of languages.

generally, I think there's value to learning languages beyond their utility. or, hell, if there's a need for a practical reason - sure, you have good translations, but aren't you curious about the originals? I know I am, for any number of works originally in languages I don't speak. or, vice-versa: aren't you interested in the translations people do of original english-language works to other languages?

I dunno, I like this post's area of interest, but I think it's pessimistic. a language being part of "the master's tools" is rooted in some palpable mental connection, at least I can feel it too, but I also think it's a stretch. mostly, though... I think it's just guilt. and it's an expressive post, so it's obviously fine, people feel guilt and talking about it is necessary, creativity is often about pulling stuff from inside you. but I also feel uneasy around guilt that's just lying there, guilting people. language can be changed, new languages can be learnt, new things can always be done. if there's guilt - and there will often be guilt, that's normal - then I think it's a good idea to use it as a starting point, not just as a monument

irish language lessons are lovely this time of the year, I'm js

Weekly Favourites

these are some lovely lists! I also really liked the incredibly barebones theming of the blog. I think it's one of the default themes, but I admire anybody who sticks with the No HTML Html Aesthetic, y'know? that sort of minimalism is always admirable. also, have I mentioned how lovely the lists are? because they are. I enjoyed them. thank you

and that's about all I have for late march! I have some stuff from april and I'm super backed-up for may (haven't checked the feed in... weeks... but in my defense, uni). so far, though, the experiment is interesting and fun. I like the glimpses I get of people's lives and thoughts and work. it's neat, I dunno!

I have like, 2-4 great big essays in the backburner, including the one I excised from this post and another inspired by a post from monocyte (who is super duper nice and has a very cool blog btw). writing is going glacially slow, as is my natural pace, but eventually I'll finish something. we'll see if it's before or after the next postroll lol

see you... next? month? maybe? who knows at this point.

either way, thank you very much for reading! cheers!!
